The moving targets of news
Me: "So, how many employees were laid off when you guys left town?"
PR lady: "We lost 8 percent of our total workforce when that location closed, but we were able to find jobs elsewhere for 39 percent of those laid off."
Me: "Ummm ... what's that in integers? "
PR lady: "We dont' disclose that information."
Me: "OK, well is your company profitable?"
PR Lady: "We grow every year."
Me: "OK, but are you profitable?"
PR Lady: "We service dozens of Fortune 5,000 companies." [yes, that's three zeroes]
Me, giving up: "Thanks for your time."

Guys, the FBI says Juggalos are totally a gang
Did you guys know Juggalos are officially a gang, according to a 2011 FBI report? I came across this while working on a story for work. Seriously, check this out: The Juggalos, a loosely-organized hybrid gang, are rapidly expanding into many US communities. Although recognized as a gang in only four states, many Juggalos subsets exhibit gang-like behavior and engage in criminal activity and...

The best advice I've ever received.
Me: They have those lucky cats at the Asian market here. They just sit in the windows, waving their asses off, being adorable and mesmerizing. I think I want one.
Eryk, in Japan: You want a good story for the rest of your life? Next paycheck, just spend the entire thing on lucky cats. Don't even think about anything else. Live with the consequences for as long as you have to.
Me: This is the best advice I've ever received.
Eryk: Wisdom of the Orient, bro.

Did Bloomberg do Occupy Wall Street a favor? →
Ezra Klein says Occupy Wall Street was going to have a hard time making it through the winter. As cold set in, he writes, all but the die-hards and the homeless would leave, prompting a media exodus. If someone died of hypothermia, the public opinion tide could turn. But … Bloomberg spared them that fate. Zucotti Park wasn’t cleared by weather, or the insufficient commitment of protesters....

Site of journalist dossiers hopes transparency... →
“The site may also test a new principle of online journalism, that transparency is the new objectivity. The notion is that journalists ought to stop pretending to be thoughtless, emotionless repeaters of attributed information, and instead act as real people who explain where they are coming from.” I wholeheartedly support this idea, and agree that 20th century...

Going native in Maine Veterans' Homes →
— Evan Carroll, a 28-year-old architect from Portland, spent nine days living the life of a patient at Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough. This was originally supposed to run in the Sept. 21 edition of The Forecaster, but due to space constraints was pushed back and pushed back until it was no longer timely. Now it’s on my blog.

Where I talk about vampire genitalia
emlane: riocarmine replied to your post: sirproperlydecapitated-podmore replied to your… They skirted the issue in the American movie, but in the Swedish one there’s a lot of Eli saying things like “I’m not a girl.” You’re supposed to think it means, “I’m not a girl, I’m a vampire.” It really means “I’m not a girl, I’m a boy.” I’ve only seen the Swedish version, and that is actually what I...

billtrotter: Just heard Space Gallery in Portland is hosting the What Cheer? Brigade on Sat., Sept. 10. Here’s a snippet of their appearance at the Machias Blueberry Festival a couple of years ago. I saw them later that night at the Blackfly Ball, and have seen them a few times since. The show at SPACE is going to be awesome. I LOVE What Cheer?.

Oh man! Portland’s own Loren Coleman made Gaby Dunn’s “100 Interviews” series! I have so much Maine pride right now, because 100 Interviews is one of my favorite things on the internet in the last year. Dunn is great, and so is the International Cryptozoology Museum on Congress Street. Read this! I’m going to do the same when I finish work today. 100interviews: ...
